Long before the name 'ebook' was known, I had a vision of an electronic bookstore and electronic access to information. I also had another vision of computers being like tiny transistor radios-(Ipod). Therefore, as a technical writer, computer programmer, instructor and technological support professional it was inevitable that I would create informational and digital products, and assist others who wished to create ebooks also.

If you have a pc that is pre-Windows XP™, (meaning Microsoft Windows© 9x, 2000, NT, or ME), you will require readers, viewers and unzipping software, including installing them to your computer. If you have downloaded zipped files or PDF files prior, you most likely will have those programs already installed on your computer.

If you have a Mac™, you are limited to PDF formats and a few other format types. Other than PDF type files, the 'other type formats' will not be discussed here. Generally, the Mac is not compatible with MS Windows© applications and formats.

Interestingly, the Microsoft Windows© compatible PC's will allow you to view and read both the Execution and the PDF format Ebooks. Some people will encourage you to compile your Ebooks using the PDF format stating that this type format can be read on all types of computers. However, it a very small market that you are reaching when designing your efforts toward the Mac.

Additionally, the Mac is currently using newer technology and most Mac users will be able to obtain converting software that will allow them to view  Microsoft Windows© compatible applications. It was inevitable that the Mac would conform in some ways to enable the product to compete in the computer industry.

If a file downloaded is zipped, it will require unzipping. The process of  zipping files is simply the compression to make a file smaller.

Most of the time the ebook and Software files are uploaded in a compressed (zipped) format to make downloading faster and more reliable in the transferring of files.

Ebooks and software files are uploaded to the Internet for readers and buyers to download them almost instantly. After the download any unzipping required takes place on your computer using unzipping software. There are a few different zip and unzip software programs with WinZip being the most widely known and used.

EBOOKS DEFINITION AND VARIOUS TYPE FORMATS

THE PDF FORMAT.......

Adobe Acrobat Reader Software must be downloaded and installed to your computer, prior to viewing eBooks in a PDF format. You can view PDF Ebooks using a Macintosh computer.

THE .EXE (execution) FORMAT......

This is a Microsoft Windows© Compatible format. This type format is normally set up the same as a web page and does not require additional or special software to view the Ebook. However, there are other proprietary ebook compiler (creators) publishing software that do require special type readers. As noted above, this report discusses only the two most common. To create aka compile an e-book in a .exe format, the documents (files) are compressed from HTML (website) pages and collected all into one main execution file. Simply clicking on that compressed (compiled) file will open the ebook that has all the pages included. You then will be able to view all the gathered pages in this one software EBOOK product.

Imagine an Ebook like a Website you visit. There is the first main page and with hypertext links that take you to different pages to read.

In imagining how an e-book is created, think of it like a pie. There are many pieces that make the pie.. The pieces of the ebook are the written pages all compiled into one file called the E-book.
